Large Framed 1922 Photograph White Star Line S. S. MAJESTIC Entering NYC Harbor

This is a Large Antique Framed Photograph of The White Star Line S. Majestic entering New York Hudson River Harbor in May, 1922. It features a 1922 scene of the New York Skyline with the Woolworth Building in the background, a Bi Plane flying overhead and a tug boat at the stern.

The photographic image is approximately 28 inches by 22 inches not including the frame. The glass in the frame is antique and shows the characteristic slight waviness of glass made in the 1920's. The image is in very good original condition with no tears, repairs or flaking.

There is slight areas of discoloration at the bottom as shown in the photographs, but, in my opinion, they do not detract from the beauty of this piece. The framing appears to have been done in 1929 and the frame remains in very good original condition. The glass has no cracks or visible chips.

This image, believed to be Maiden Voyage of The Majestic, appeared in the June, 1922, Volume I of "The Port of New York Harbor and Marine Review" on page 19. The reference is available on line through Google Books.

The image was later used in a color tinted version as a post card. Majestic also known as the R.

It was built, in 1914, as the German Steamship S. Bismark but was given to Great Britain at the end of World War I in reparation for the German sinking of the HMHS Britannic. On its maiden voyage May 11,1922, The Majestic traveled from Southampton, England, to New York in 5 days, 14 hours and 45 minutes, arriving on May 16. It had a length of 955.8 feet, weighed 56,551 tons.

There were accommodations for 4,100 passengers and a crew of 1,000. It was powered by 4 Parson-B&V direct drive steam Turbines driving 4 propellers and traveled at an average speed of 24.75 knots. It's Captain was The White Star's Commodore. As an incidental note of clarification, the letters S. Both designations were used for The Majestic.
