Titanic Chief Officer Henry Wilde Original Letter Jan 24, 1911 RARE
This is an original hand written letter by Henry Wilde, dated January 24th, 1911. Henry Wilde later the same year would become chief officer of the Olympic under Captain E. Smith and the following year would go down with the Titanic. This is a very poignant letter as Henry's wife Pollie had died several weeks earlier on Christmas Eve of 1910 from complication of giving birth to twin boys (both died as well). On January 15th, Henry was obligated to go to training for the RNR at Devonport which is the stationary this letter is written on.

The letter is written to his sister-in-law Annie Williams and reveals some of the grief he is going through and a rare glimpse into the life of one of the least known officers of the Titanic. Any letters written by Titanic's officers are almost unheard of, so hears a chance to add a great item to your collection. I was very pleased to receive your letter and to know that you are getting stronger. I dont know really what to say to you in a letter.

You must mind and take care of yourself until you are quite strong again. I wrote to Jenny during the week.

I wish I was nearer so that I could stop up for the weekend but it is impossible to do so, the journey is such a long one. I have not been out of the Barracks since I arrived with the exception of two Thursday evenings when I was going to the War College here for instruction from 4-40 until 7pm. I dont know what I will do with myself over the weekend.

It seems so very long. We finish about 12 oclock on Saturday and nothing to do until Monday morning.

We are supposed to write an essay after attending a lecture on Saturday so I must try and do that to pass the time away. I have not been into Plymouth yet.

I cant bear to go there it brings back the memories of the time Pollie and I spent down here 7 years ago. I do feel so miserable.

I cant think of anything else. My loss is terrible to bear. It really seems impossible that such a thing can have happened. Will you kindly excuse more this time I can write anymore now. Mind and take care of yourself.

I will be glad to see you again. With love to you all. This letter will be included in the near future in a book featuring a large portion of Henry's known existing letters.
