This was the 40th Anniversary, of date the Titanic was supposed to sail into that harbor. Then sailed for New York. Then proceeded to Southampton, England (the opposite route the Titanic took) and eventually Bremerhaven, Germany. A large amount of troops disembarked at Southampton. We were there on April 27th which was the 40th Anniversary that the Titanic was supposed to be back in Southampton on its return from New York. The Titanic was the largest maritime disaster. Naval peacetime disaster occurred hundreds miles south of us on 8th day after leaving Norfolk. The aircraft carrier Wasp sliced into the destroyer Hobson with the loss of 176 sailors. The damaged Wasp then proceeded to New York/New Jersey where aircraft carrier Hornet was docked. The bow of Hornet was removed and placed on the Wasp. I saw the Wasp in Norfolk harbor on April 18th which was the 10th Anniversary of Col. Jimmy Doolittle flying from that carrier in a B-25 to bomb Tokyo.
This was one of the major stories of World War II. It left a couple of days after we were there. We took a more northerly route. Did not see any icebergs as deck space was very limited to view anything. We docked and disembarked in Bremerhaven, Germany on April 30th.
